Jose Medrano is a 7th year Ph.D. candidate completing his dissertation work in the laboratory of Professor Francisco Naya at Boston University. His research is centered on the MEF2A transcription factor, using mice as his primary model. Specifically, his project focuses on understanding the gene programs and molecular programs regulated by MEF2A throughout the adult mammalian heart.
Jose is paired with Michael Lenane, teaching 6th grade Earth, Physical, and Life Science at Central Middle School in Quincy, MA. Their focus is to strengthen students� analytical and data processing skills. Their underlying theme for the year will be to have students become aware of climate change and act locally to reduce carbon emissions. Jose will bring his knowledge of systems biology to enhance students� understanding of carbon emission networks and biological cycles involved in climate change. He will also enrich the curriculum with exciting and new scientific methods and techniques to promote interest in STEM education.
