Jan Marie Andersen is a 6th year graduate student working with Professor Andrew West in the Astronomy Department at Boston University. Her research focuses on low-mass M dwarf stars and the magnetic activity in their atmospheres. She is working on an observational project using stellar clusters of various ages to calibrate an age-activity relation for M dwarfs.


Jan Marie is paired with Stephanie Pottinger teaching 8th grad science at Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy in Dorchester, MA. Their primary focus is to education students on the realities and impacts of climate change, and empower them to become advocates in their communities to help combat future climate change. In order to do this they have introduced a new unit in the 8th grad science curriculum focus on climate change, and the causes and effects, both global and local. As well as the climate change unit, they have They are also focusing on teaching students the scientific process, and helping them to learn to be critical thinkers and to be able to apply the scientific method in various aspects of study and learning.
